The Copper Country Trail begins at the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, the only road access to the Keweenaw Peninsula, and follows US-41 north approximately 47 miles to historic Copper Harbor — one of the early centers of copper mining activity, an important port in the startup of the mining industry and Michigan’s northernmost community. A few miles past Copper Harbor you will find the northern terminus of US-41.
The Copper Country Trail also encompasses the Keweenaw Peninsula from coast to coast along this State Heritage Route.
As you progress along the trail, you will experience the historic Copper Country through the two districts of the Keweenaw National Historical Park (Quincy Unit and Calumet Unit), numerous Keweenaw Heritage Sites, scenic wonders and culturally rich former copper mining communities.
The route also offers several side trips to other significant historic, scenic, and recreational sites.
Side trips include:
- M-26 from Hancock through Lake Linden to Calumet
- Lake Linden through Gay to Lac La Belle back to US-41
- M-26 / Brockway Mountain Drive from Copper Harbor to Phoenix
- M-203 from Hancock to Calumet
- Cliff Drive
